New Short Film Festival Brings Global and Local Cinema to Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale’s film scene is set to expand with the launch of the Savoir-faire Shorts Film Festival, a new event dedicated to celebrating short films from around the world. Hosted at Savor Cinema from February 14 to 17, 2025, the festival is presented by the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) and the Broward County Film Society.
The four-day event will feature 91 short films from 26 countries, with a special focus on projects made in Broward County. Organizers say the festival will provide a unique platform for both emerging and established filmmakers, strengthening the local industry while drawing international attention to South Florida’s creative talent.
Managing Director of the Broward County Film Society, Hal Axler, emphasized the importance of short films in the industry.
“Short films are a unique canvas for storytelling as their creativity thrives within constraints, and they serve as a vital heartbeat of the film community, inspiring connection, conversation, and innovation,” Axler said.
Spotlight on Local Talent
One of the key components of the festival is the “Made in Broward” showcase, scheduled for February 17. This program will highlight films produced in the region, giving South Florida filmmakers an opportunity to screen their work in front of industry professionals, fellow artists, and the public.
The lineup includes a mix of dramas, comedies, documentaries, and animated shorts, reflecting the diverse perspectives and storytelling styles emerging from the local creative community. Some of the featured films explore social issues such as period poverty in public schools, LGBTQ+ identity, and the challenges faced by immigrant communities.
A New Hub for Industry Networking
Beyond film screenings, the festival will also serve as a networking hub for professionals in the film industry. Filmmakers, producers, and students will have the chance to engage in discussions through in-person Q&A sessions and a special panel on securing film grants.
A reception on February 17 will bring together local filmmakers, industry insiders, and funders to discuss the business side of independent filmmaking. Organizers hope these connections will lead to future collaborations and increased investment in local productions.
Economic and Cultural Impact
The festival is expected to generate economic benefits for Fort Lauderdale by bringing in visitors, attracting media attention, and increasing foot traffic to local businesses. Cultural events like the Savoir-faire Shorts Film Festival not only promote the arts but also contribute to the city’s reputation as a destination for creative talent.
With Savor Cinema as the venue, the festival will also highlight the importance of preserving and utilizing historic cultural spaces for artistic programming. The independent theater, originally built in the 1920s, has long been a hub for South Florida’s film community.
Opportunities for Film Students and Enthusiasts
Organizers are making an effort to encourage participation from students and emerging filmmakers by offering free admission to film students who register for FLIFF’s Movie Lovers Club. This initiative aims to make the festival accessible to those who are still learning the craft and hoping to break into the industry.
Public screenings of international and locally made short films will provide an opportunity for attendees to explore different storytelling techniques and cinematic styles. By exposing audiences to a diverse range of films, the festival hopes to inspire the next generation of South Florida filmmakers.
How to Attend
The festival will take place at Savor Cinema, located at 506 SE 6th Street in Fort Lauderdale. Free parking will be available at the Courthouse Garage on SE 5th Avenue.
Tickets are now available at fliff.com. Prices for the event vary, with the opening night showcase priced at $20 for FLIFF members and $25 for non-members. All other shorts programs are free for members and $10 for non-members.
As the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary, the addition of the Savoir-faire Shorts Film Festival marks an important milestone for South Florida’s film community. With a growing number of filmmakers calling the region home, events like this one provide a much-needed platform for creative voices to be heard.
