Beautifying Broward College One Shovel at a Time

Inaugural Philanthropy Week encourages community to give back during

Broward College’s 64th anniversary celebration

Davie, Fla. (August 20, 2024) – Volunteers don’t need a proverbial green thumb to roll up their sleeves and put on gardening gloves during Campus Beautification Day at the Broward College A. Hugh Adams Central Campus at 3501 Davie Rd., Building 19 in Davie on Saturday, September 7 from 9 a.m. - Noon.

Organized by Broward College Cares and Broward College Alumni & Friends, Campus Beautification Day culminates Broward College Foundation’s inaugural Philanthropy Week which is set for September 2-7. During Philanthropy Week, Broward College Foundation will celebrate the generosity of donors and launch the milestone event, marking 64 years since Broward College opened on September 6, 1960. Students, faculty, staff, donors, and the community are encouraged to show up and show off their Seahawk pride by getting involved in philanthropy to raise money for scholarships that make education accessible to all.

“This campus beautification project is a seedling for our comprehensive initiative to engage Broward County community members, businesses, and alumni in Broward College’s mission to provide scholarships and enhance student success,” said Anthony Stewart, Alumni Engagement Manager at Broward College. “Broward College is a key and critical institution for Broward County. Alumni & Friends is delighted to partner with Broward College Cares to make this project a reality.”

Campus Beautification Day tasks will include painting wooden birdhouses, pots and decorative rocks, installing native plants and milkweed in the butterfly garden, and laying mulch. Groups and duties will be assigned at check-in. Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are welcome and are asked to wear attire appropriate for yard work. Volunteers will receive a Broward College Cares t-shirt, swag bag, and be entered in a raffle for prizes.

“BC Cares is thrilled to bring together our staff, faculty, alumni, and friends to enhance our cherished Central campus. We aim to foster a sense of community and ownership through various activities, whether it's painting and hanging birdhouses or planting and mulching in the garden,” said Elaina Moran, Director of Institutional Events at Broward College and organizer of BC Cares events.

Participation is free and hours can count toward community service goals, so volunteers are asked to bring tracking forms to be signed. To register, visit giving.broward.edu/beautification-day.

Donations to the Seahawk Marketplace, Broward College’s on-campus pantry that offers free food and personal hygiene items to students, will also be accepted on Campus Beautification Day. The pantry’s wish list of items is available by clicking here.
